Share your story about Southall in the 1950s/60s/70s
Did you or your parents live in Southall in the 1950s/60s/70s? Do you remember going to the Dominion cinema? Do you remember the IWA? Were you involved in any cultural/political etc events? Do you have any old newspaper cutting or articles about Southall during these decades? Are you interesting in volunteering to organise an exhibition or contributing to a book or film on the IWA?
We'd love to hear your experiences and stories about life in Southall to contribute to our project.

We NEED old IWA photos
We NEED old IWA photos
We are
particularly keen to identify individuals who (or whose parents) settled in
Southall during this early period and who may have been involved in/with IWA,
have first-hand knowledge of key events in the history of IWA or have access to
information e.g. old photographs, newspaper articles etc.

in being involved in a unique project which will record the history of
IWA, the contributions of the early
immigrants who settled in Southall in the 1950s and 1960s, who laid the
foundation of the IWA, campaigned
against discrimination & equal rights and established Southall as an
icon of the Asian community nationally.
We are looking for volunteers
to help us with
·
Finding and making contact with key people who settled in Southall in the
1950s and 1960s
·
Getting
information & community
research work e.g. old photos, newspaper articles of key events in IWA/Southall
·
recording interviews with key people on tape and
video film
·
translating and interpreting work ( Panjabi)
·
researching information via library, websites etc
·
running and maintaining our website and blog
·
making a film, creating an exhibition or booklet
Anyone aged 16 and over can volunteer

The Project Begins...
60 years of Indian Workers Association (IWA): Legacy & Contribution
is a project that aims to collect, preserve and communicate the heritage of the IWA, the oldest and largest community organisation in the UK established in 1956 by people from the India Diaspora.The project will record and preserve the histories and contributions of survivors and 'first generation' families who settled in Southall in the 1950s and 1960s, laid the foundation of the Asian community and established both IWA and Southall as an icon for the Asian and wider BME community nationally to emulate.
